58 - Striving for Equity

This month we will turn our attention to the Sixth Keystone of Paraclism: "In all things strive for an equitable result imbued with integrity and empathy." This Keystone is foundational to our faith and our way of life, as it calls us to pursue fairness and justice in a manner that goes beyond mere equality.

It is crucial to understand the distinction between equality and equity. While equality seeks to provide the same resources or opportunities to everyone, equity recognizes that different people have different needs and circumstances. Equity is about achieving fair outcomes by addressing these differences. It is not about treating everyone the same, but about giving everyone what they need to succeed.

Consider a scenario where three people of different heights are trying to see over a fence. Equality would give each person the same-sized box to stand on, but only the tallest might see over the fence, while the shorter ones still struggle. Equity, on the other hand, would provide boxes of different heights, allowing each person to see over the fence. The goal is a fair result, not an equal one.

Equity demands that we look deeper into situations, understand the unique challenges and strengths of individuals, and respond with compassion and fairness. It requires us to act with integrity and empathy, ensuring that our actions genuinely benefit those in need. This is the hidden or underlying Keystone in Paraclism, the guiding principle that all our outcomes should reflect some form of equity.

In our daily lives, striving for equity can take many forms. It begins with recognizing and addressing the inequities that exist. This requires us to be aware of the systemic and structural barriers that different groups face. Whether it's in education, healthcare, employment, or other areas, we must identify where unfair disparities exist and work to address them. We must challenge ourselves to see beyond our own experiences and understand the struggles of others.

Listening and learning from those who are marginalized or disadvantaged is essential. Their voices are crucial in understanding their needs and crafting appropriate solutions. We must be humble and open-minded, willing to learn from the experiences of others. This empathetic approach ensures that our actions are informed and effective.

Acting with integrity is fundamental to striving for equity. We must ensure that our actions align with our values and principles. This means being honest, transparent, and consistent in our efforts to promote fairness. We must hold ourselves accountable and be willing to correct course when necessary.

Empathy lies at the heart of equity. We must strive to understand and share the feelings of others. Empathy allows us to connect with people on a deeper level and respond to their needs with compassion. It guides us to create solutions that are not just technically good but practically effective.

As we embrace the principle of equity, let us remember that our goal is to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. It is a challenging task, but one that is essential for the well-being of our communities and society as a whole.

May we all be inspired to strive for equitable results in all that we do, imbued with integrity and empathy. Let us commit to making a difference, one fair and compassionate action at a time. This IS the Way.
