57 - Embracing the Summer of Discovery

July, for most of us in the northern hemisphere, heralds the arrival of summer and all of the excitement we feel when the outdoors are calling. This is a season of warmth, light, and boundless energy. The world outside is alive with the vibrant colors of nature, and our hearts and spirits soar with the excitement that only this time of year can bring. It is in this joyous atmosphere that we are called to reflect on the Fifth Keystone of Paraclism: Seek and follow your calling in life.

The idea of a calling, a vocation, or a purpose is not new. It is a concept that resonates deeply within us, for it speaks to the very essence of our existence. To seek and follow one's calling is to embark on a journey of self-discovery, fulfillment, and service. It is to listen to the inner voice that guides us towards our true path in life. And what better time to embark on this journey than now, when the world itself seems to be calling us to explore, to discover, and to grow?

But how do we find our calling? How do we uncover the passions that drive us, the purposes that fulfill us? Here are five methods to help you on this journey:

  1. Reflect on Your Passions and Interests: Take time to think about what truly excites you. What activities make you lose track of time? What subjects or hobbies ignite a spark within you? Reflecting on these questions can help you identify areas of passion that may point towards your calling. Engage in activities that bring you joy and pay attention to how they make you feel.

  2. Seek Feedback from Others: It can be notoriously difficult to perform an accurate self-assessment. At times, others can see our strengths and potential more clearly than we can. Talk to friends, family, and mentors about what they perceive as your talents and passions. Their insights can provide valuable perspectives and help you see yourself in a new light. They might notice qualities or skills in you that you have overlooked.

  3. Explore New Experiences: The summer is a perfect time to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Volunteer, take up a new hobby, travel, or enroll in a class. These experiences can open your eyes to new possibilities and help you discover interests and talents you never knew you had. Embrace the unknown and be open to what it can teach you – and the same for what others may teach you (recall the Fourth Keystone: Endeavor to learn new things and be educated by others).

  4. Listen to Your Inner Voice: In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it can be easy to ignore our inner voice. Take time for quiet reflection, meditation, or prayer to connect with your inner self. Pay attention to the thoughts and feelings that arise. Often, our intuition can guide us towards our true calling if we take the time to listen. Trust your instincts and give yourself the space to hear them. Performing the Ritual of Introspection is an excellent way to do this.

  5. Set Goals and Take Action: Once you have identified potential callings, set specific goals to explore them further. Create a plan and take concrete steps towards achieving these goals. Whether it's pursuing further education, seeking mentorship, or gaining experience, taking action is essential to discovering and following your calling. Break down your goals into manageable steps and celebrate your progress along the way.

Remember, seeking and following your calling is not a one-time event but a lifelong journey. It requires patience, persistence, and an open heart. It is a path that may twist and turn, but each step brings you closer to a life of fulfillment and purpose.

As we enjoy the beauty and excitement of this summer season, let us also embrace the opportunity to explore our passions and discover our true calling. For in doing so, we not only enrich our own lives but also contribute to the flourishing of our community and the world.

May the Paraclete grant us the courage to seek, the wisdom to listen, and the determination to follow our calling in life.
