62 - Spirit of The Mass

As the calendar year approaches its close and the calendar ushers us toward New Year’s Day, we prepare for one of the most sacred and joyous traditions of Paraclism: The Mass. This annual gathering is more than a celebration—it is a time of connection, reflection, and shared purpose that brings friends and loved ones together at a moment when the world itself seems to pause.

The Mass, occurring during the final week of the year, invites us to step back from the bustle of life, from the errands and tasks that fill our days, and to dedicate time to those who matter most. This is not a season defined by material gifts or hurried preparations but rather by the quiet and meaningful exchange of thought, creativity, and care.

While some Members adhere to a customary exchange of modest gifts, The Mass places its emphasis not on possessions but on people. What we offer one another during this time is something far greater than anything that could be wrapped in paper and ribbon: our presence, our insights, and our hearts.

At the heart of The Mass is the tradition of sharing, not just in the breaking of bread but in the exchange of ideas, stories, and passions. Each adult and child has the opportunity to deliver a presentation or sermon, a chance to reflect on the year past and offer something personal to the group. Whether sincere or silly, these offerings are as varied as the individuals who give them—some speak of the state of faith in the world, others share their passions through workshops or performances, and still others lead lighthearted show-and-tell sessions, while others dive into discussions about life, growth, and the challenges they face.

This reimagined gift exchange transforms The Mass into a time of deep connection. It asks us to put aside distractions, to focus not on acquiring or giving material things but on building rapport, sharing knowledge, and celebrating each other. It is a practice that anchors us in what truly matters: our faith, our relationships, and our collective journey.

The beauty of The Mass lies in its flexibility and inclusivity. There is no singular way to contribute—whether through storytelling, music, humor, or heartfelt reflections, each Member’s offering is received with gratitude and love. The diversity of contributions serves as a reminder that we all bring something unique to the table, that the act of giving is as much about intention as it is about the gift itself.

This tradition also serves a higher purpose. In stepping away from the frenzy of holiday shopping and societal expectations, we embrace the values that Paraclism holds dear: efficiency, empathy, and the pursuit of meaningful connection. The Mass is not only a moment of respite but also a declaration of our priorities—a celebration of relationships over consumption, of substance over spectacle.

As we prepare for The Mass, let us carry its spirit in our hearts. Let us take this time to reflect on the year that has passed, to consider the lessons we have learned and the growth we have experienced. And let us approach this gathering with gratitude—for our community, for the wisdom and joy each Member brings, and for the opportunity to begin anew as the calendar turns.

May this year’s Mass remind us that what binds us together is not what we possess but who we are to one another. And may it inspire us to carry that spirit of connection and reflection into the year to come.
