22 - Drought

An interesting poll has found that America is facing a crisis of faith. Rather, its churches and synagogues are facing membership declines year over year. You can take a look at the poll numbers on Gallup's site.

The trend shown is fairly star: in the 50s and 60s, over 70% of Americans belonged to a church or religious organization. From the 80ies and through the noughts, that dipped into the 60% range, and then the 50% range, and was just at 47% as of last year, in 2020. The really interesting bit here is the inference that these figures are dipping, not because of a result of a lack of faith, but rather as the result of a lack of affiliation. A lack of religious preference. Folks who don't have a preference, tend not to belong to an organization. This is not because they lack faith, or a desire to pursue self improvement - they just do not wish to be pinned down or categorized into the various buckets that have been laid out by society. Likely an apathy brought about by the politicization and charged discourse in today's social and political climate.

But this is actually a great story, because what it is really highlighting is that people are beginning to realize that the solution is not to be a part of a big faceless organized religion. Rather, faith can and ought be pursued on one's own terms - on terms that resonate with someone on a fundamental level. As the Fifth Keystone tells us - seek and follow your calling in life, this is an excellent way to quench that thirst felt by your soul. Just as we have done in our Temple, they are seeking faith and fulfilment on their own terms, in ways which move and speak to their soul on their own terms.

This is an important reminder - remember to not be afraid to have open conversations with your friends and family. Inquire about their beliefs and their practices. Adopt some of these if they resonate in your heart. One thing to not do, is push any of your beliefs on them, and only share if inquired.
